There are children who cover their ears in the supermarket, cry at the hand dryer and want to leave the birthday party after twenty minutes. Often they are the same children who cannot bear clothing labels and flinch at candles on the cake. We are not doctors and do not make diagnoses. But from many customer conversations we can say how parents use hearing protection in such situations, and where it helps and where it does not.
What hearing protection can do here, and what not
Earmuffs lower the level by their SNR value, for the Kiddies by 28 dB to EN 352-1:2020. A hand dryer at around 90 dB then arrives at about 62 dB, the level of a normal conversation. What hearing protection cannot do: change the situation. It takes the volume away from the child, not the crowd, the lights and the unfamiliarity. Many parents report that the earmuffs do one thing above all: the child has something it can control itself. It puts them on when it gets too much and takes them off when it is fine again. That is the real benefit.
Which model for which age?
For babies and toddlers up to about 24 months the MINI+ with elastic band (SNR 24 dB, head circumference 38.5 to 49 cm). From kindergarten age the Kiddies with adjustable headband (52 to 60 cm). For schoolchildren who do not want earmuffs on their head because they stand out, the Kids+ earplugs with SNR 29 dB to EN 352-2:2020, discreet and pocket-sized. The size guide helps with the choice, the comparison Earmuffs or earplugs? with the type.
Typical situations
Supermarket and shopping centre: Put the earmuffs on in the car park, not inside when it is already too much. Short trips, a clear announcement of what will happen.
Nursery and school: Agree with the staff or teachers in which situations the child may use the earmuffs, for example in the morning circle, at lunch, in the gym. Many institutions know this by now and have fixed rules for it.
Family gatherings and restaurants: Agree on a retreat beforehand, a quiet room or a walk. The earmuffs are the first step, the retreat the second. Allow the child both, without comment.
Fireworks, parades, concerts: This is not about sensitivity but about levels above 100 dB where every child should wear hearing protection. See the article New Year’s Eve with kids.
Not all day
Hearing protection is a tool for loud moments, not a permanent state. A child who hears muffled all day does not learn to cope with normal sounds and picks up speech less well. So: on when it is loud, off when it is quiet, and let the child decide for itself as soon as it can.
When to see the paediatrician
If noise sensitivity severely limits the child in daily life, appears suddenly, or comes with ear pain, hearing problems or speech issues, that belongs in paediatric hands. Hearing protection can be one building block; it does not replace that assessment.
